Welcome to Marilla, NY

Overview

The town of Marilla is on the eastern edge of Erie County, bordered to the north by Alden, to the east by Bennington (Wyoming County), to the south by Wales and to the west by Elma. This is another of the small, wide-open towns with plenty of wide-open spaces for outdoor activities. The population is slightly over 5,000. Buffalo Creek flows through the southwest part of town, and Cayuga Creek is in the northeast part of town. Students here attend either the Iroquois Central School District or the Alden Central School District. Marilla is one of the Southtowns in the Buffalo area.

Essentials

For retail shopping, residents here head west to Lancaster or, for a wider variety, to Cheektowaga. Both are a short drive west. Eastern Hills Mall, to the northwest in Williamsville, also is nearby. For grocery shopping, neighboring Alden has a Topps Friendly Markets store on Broadway Avenue. The closest Wegmans stores are in nearby Depew, on Transit Road (Route 78) and on Dick Road.

Recreation & Entertainment

Most of the recreation here is of the outdoor variety: Fishing, hiking, camping and the like. Nearby Lancaster has the Lancaster Opera House, which hosts plays and musicals. Two large movie-theater complexes are in Lancaster, both on well-traveled Transit Road. East Aurora has a few significant historic sites, including the Millard Fillmore House. Darien Lake Theme Park, the largest amusement park complex in New York State, is a quick drive to the east of Marilla.

Transportation & Traffic

This is a rural community, so traffic isn’t usually an issue. Route 354 runs east-west through the north part of town.

Pros & Cons

If you like small town living with plenty of wide-open spaces, Marilla is for you. The Iroquois Central School District, which covers most of Marilla, is regularly ranked high in the region and is a plus for families with children. Darien Lake Theme Park is only about 15 miles northeast of Marilla.
