Overview

With about 88,000 residents, Cheektowaga is the second-largest suburb in Erie County. The town is located in the north-central part of the county, bordered to the north by Amherst, to the east by Lancaster, to the south by West Seneca and to the west by the city of Buffalo. Cheektowaga encompasses all of the village of Sloan, the western half of the village of Depew (shared with the town of Lancaster), and a sliver of the village of Williamsville (most of which is in Amherst). Cheektowaga is the home of the Walden Galleria Mall, the largest and perhaps the most upscale mall in the Buffalo area.


Essentials

For retail shopping, look no further than the Walden Galleria Mall, the largest mall in the Buffalo region. A unique shopping attraction is the Niagara Hobby and Craft Mart on Union Road, which sells merchandise like kites and radio-control cars, boats and planes. For grocery shopping, Cheektowaga has three Tops Friendly Markets (on Union Road, Harlem Road and Thruway Plaza Drive). Five Wegmans supermarkets are in the area – two in the village of Depew, two in the village of Williamsville and one in the town of Amherst. 



Recreation & Entertainment

Walden Galleria Mall has several entertainment options, including the massive Walden Galleria Stadium 16 movie theater complex. Another movie theater complex in town is MovieLand 8 Theatres, on Thruway Plaza Drive. Fast Freddies Speedway is on Walden Avenue in Depew, and the AMF Thruway Lanes bowling center also is on Walden Avenue. 



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) runs north-south through Cheektowaga. Interstate 190 runs from I-90 to the Buffalo city line, and beyond into downtown Buffalo and north to Niagara Falls. Route 33 runs east-west through Cheektowaga, and Route 20 and Route 78, known locally as Transit Road, pass through the town.



Pros & Cons

This is the second-largest of Buffalo’s suburbs and has all or part of three villages within its borders. The Walden Galleria mall is a big attraction. The airport is located in Cheektowaga, so prepare for noisy, low-flying jets.
